Chances are you’ve never seen this cartoon. It was an attempt in the mid-90s to bring back the short cartoon as well as give Mickey more of an edge, but it was considered a bit too dark and Mickey hasn’t really been tampered with since. Thankfully I was able to see this on the big screen attached to A Goofy Movie (1995) and it remains for me one of the finest short pieces of animation ever made. So before you scroll down to the hidden gags I suggest you watch this mini masterpiece:
*Not a hard one to miss; Mickey is playing a Snow White video game – which looks absolutely brilliant I might add.
*Ok, this isn’t a reference to another Disney film but as it’s such a bizarre thing to have in a Disney film, I just had to include it. When Mickey stands outside the professor’s house, the shot is a homage to The Exorcist (1973).
*This is possibly my favourite ever in-joke. The name Frankenollie is a nod to Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two best friends who were amongst the last remaining members of Walt’s original team of animators named The Nine Old Men. This is why Frankenollie is my user name on so many websites. Also, the number 1313 may be a reference to 1313 South Harbor Boulevard, the address of the Disneyland Resort in California.
*When Mickey is stood at the door, he begins to whistle the theme tune from Steamboat Willie (1928), his first cartoon. This is around the 2:02 mark in the video above.
*After Mickey knocks on the door, the floor opens up and he is sucked down, along with Zazu from The Lion King (1994).
*Mickey has a photograph of himself from his Steamboat Willie days inside his wallet.
*Zazu makes a second appearance when the monster roars at Mickey and he comes flying out of his mouth.
